Abstract

This study examines in depth and comprehensively the meaning of Jesus's surrender in the Garden of Gethsemane and Jesus' question on the cross as the theological basis for the implementation of believers' faith in the contemporary context. Through an in depth exegetical analysis of the texts of Matthew 26:39, 42, 44 and Matthew 27:46 using the methods of narrative exegesis, discourse analysis, and intertextuality with the Old Testament tradition, this study finds that Jesus's surrender in Gethsemane is an expression of ontological obedience that integrates the human will with the divine will in the dynamics of an intimate Father-Son relationship, while the question on the cross represents God's eschatological solidarity with human suffering that does not diminish the hypostatic unity but fulfills the mission of kenosis. The novelty of this study lies in the hermeneutical synthesis that connects the kenosis dimension in theologia crucis with the contemporary praxis of surrender, offering a theological framework that integrates existential suffering with eschatological hope through the development of the theological categories of "eschatological solidarity" and "sacramental participation." This study uses a narrative exegesis method with a discourse analysis approach that considers the historical, literary, and theological context of Matthew's text, and integrates reflections from the patristic tradition, the Reformation, and contemporary theology. The results of the study indicate that implementation for believers includes three integral dimensions: ontological (character formation through self-surrender that follows the pattern of imitatio Christi), epistemological (understanding God's presence in suffering that changes the paradigm of theodicy), and praxis (participation in Christ's suffering as a sacramentality of life that challenges the logic of contemporary consumption and individualism).
